Many Vietnamese Facebook users think they are an authority on how to behave properly on aircraft, while it turns out they even do not know of anything called common sense, let alone airplane etiquette.
A large number of Vietnamese Internet users are willing to judge and criticize anything they find on Facebook, including those issues that have nothing to do with them or the fields they have no knowledge of.
These ‘Facebook critics’ tend to enthusiastically discuss and show their disapproval of even the most trivial things, and they all seem to be experts on airplane etiquette, or what should and should not be done aboard, as illustrated by some recent cases.
In late July, local netizens directed a groundswell of criticism at singer Lệ Quyên for letting her son pee into an airsickness bag on board a Vietnam Airlines plane.
Earlier in late June, local Facebook users also blasted a Vietnamese beauty queen for exhibiting an “ugly sleeping style” on another flight operated by the national flag carrier.
In the latest instance, a Vietnamese actress was slammed for breastfeeding her son aboard a plane bound for Hà Nội from Hồ Chí Minh City.
Phạm Thị Thanh Vân, who is also a popular master of ceremonies, has been confronted by a wave of criticism after uploading a photo showing her suckling her son on Facebook on September 18.
The breastfeeding picture was regarded by some Facebook users as “impolite” and “graceless,” whereas the mother of three insisted she did nothing wrong.
It was a “peaceful moment” and the actress did not have any intention to look sexy because the ‘sensitive part’ was well covered by her T-shirt, she said in a status update on Sunday.
“I just shared the photo on Facebook because it shows a peaceful moment between mom and son.”
The post reads.
The Facebook post was uploaded with a screenshot showing a comment that reads:
“How could people keep inviting such a graceless woman to be a master of ceremonies?”
“To those anti-breastfeeding people, we mothers just love to be so ‘graceless’ in order not to see our children crying out of hunger.”
The suckling photo was posted when the actress was about to fly from Hồ Chí Minh City, where she resides, to Hà Nội to be the emcee in a show.
Vân has received huge support from friends on her Facebook after the Sunday status update, as it is obviously inappropriate and irrational to criticize a mom for breastfeeding her child.
But it seems such common sense is beyond the knowledge of the fault-finders on Facebook, who are dubbed gadflies, or ‘auto-complainers,’ as they would automatically complain about and criticize anything without thoroughly thinking about it.
The story of Vân is just like that of Miss Việt Nam Nguyễn Cao Kỳ Duyên in late June.
The winner of the 2014 Vietnamese beauty pageant was seen sleeping on a flight with her legs wide open, and was thus rapped as “graceless” by local Facebook users.
For those ‘auto-complainers,’ it thus seems that people have to remain nice-looking even when they are sleeping.
