Operation Smile Việt Nam will extend their free surgery program to An Giang Province from April 8-12 to offer life-changing surgeries to children suffering from cleft lips and cleft palates in the Mekong Delta region.
The operations will be carried out at the general hospital in An Giang, located at 2 Lê Lợi Street, Mỹ Bình Ward, Long Xuyên Town.
Children with a cleft lip above six months in age and cleft palate above 18 months can be taken to the site for diagnosis and tests starting on April 8 to prepare for free operations later.
Patients who are malnourished or have a fever, coughing, diabetes, or heart disease are not eligible for immediate treatment.
It is expected that around 100 patients will benefit from the latest program in An Giang.
Over 200 Vietnamese children have been treated in Hà Nội and Hồ Chí Minh City by Operation Smile this year.
As a non-profit healthcare organization, Operation Smile has provided care and treatment for over 20,000 children in Việt Nam over the last 24 years.
In 2012, 2,244 patients benefited from the organization’s work.
In Việt Nam, approximately one in every 500 babies is born with a cleft lip and/or cleft palate, and many needy children have never received surgery, which is actually fairly inexpensive.
With US$250 and 45 minutes, one cleft lip surgery can change a child’s life forever.
