Local scientists doubt water-fuelled generator

Ph.D Huynh Quyen, director of the oil refinement and petrol chemistry center of the Ho Chi Minh City Polytechnics University, called on the author of the research to reveal further technical information regarding the invention.

He added that the invention is based on the disintegration of water to separate hydrogen and then burn hydrogen to create energy to charge the battery of the machine.

But it always requires the consumption of a big source of energy, 135kcal/mol, to disintegrate hydrogen and oxygen in the water molecule because its chemical bond is strong.

And the reaction can’t produce a big thermal volume, so it can’t be called an ‘endogenous reaction’ as Khe mentioned.

In short, a reaction to disintegrate water and split hydrogen always needs energy, Quyen confirmed.

But Khe had announced that ‘the process requires no exterior source of energy because nano technology has huge endogenous energy.’

Another important aspect, Quyen added, is the difference between catalyst and nanomaterial.

Most of solid catalysts are called nanomaterials, but nano materials are not a catalyst, according to Quyen.

Unlike other reagents that participate in a chemical reaction, a catalyst is not consumed by the reaction itself, and a catalyst always returns to its initial state after a reaction.

But Khe said, “After reactions with hydrogen, the nanomaterial becomes non-toxic waste and will be taken back for recycling.”

If it is taken back for recycling, it is a reagent, not a catalyst, Quyen confirmed.

Another matter is the balance of energy for a reaction, or the effect.

Is it efficient to reclaim energy from hydrogen against the provision of a source of energy for a reaction to create hydrogen?

“Though I haven’t read the results of Khe’s research, I think that the research to create hydrogen is not new; what is new is his discovery or invention of a new catalyst,” the scientist noted.

“The development of modern theories of thermodynamics has indicated that a perpetual motion device is impossible, based on the law of the preservation of energy.

“As for the matter of technological secret, Khe can register his patent under the current Vietnamese law.

But even research that wins a Nobel Prize must be announced at conferences before being officially recognized.”

In agreeing with the above points, Ph.D Nguyen Huu Luong — vice director of the R&D center of the Vietnam Petroleum Institute, noted that water can never react with a catalyst by itself, without any source of energy to compel the process.

“Water can’t be disintegrated with the presence of catalyst, though one can split hydrogen and oxygen from water through electrical, thermal or photo energy methods.

“It is illogical to separate hydrogen from water without the participation of any source of energy.

Even an endogenous reaction needs energy to activate a reaction,” Luong confirmed.
